«I have been a fan of Kanepixel’s work, always excited when he uploaded new Backrooms content on his YouTube. I am beyond proud of him seeing his name on the big screen. Very much deserved. The movie was beyond expectations. Disturbing in ways I haven’t seen before. It was truly unsettling and had me on the edge of my seat many times. It’s always refreshing when horror movies do not need a jumpscare every 6 minutes to make the movie scary. The backrooms itself looked so real, and was even creepier than what you see in the backrooms games. I appreciated that Kane included multiple levels! The soundtrack was also phenomenal. Can’t wait to see more of his work.»

«I enjoyed the A24 influence in the cinematography, and the actors really brought it home with their performances. I do also enjoy how the movie stayed true to the series on YouTube. The big disappointment for me is how most of the movie was spent doing nothing to character arcs or progression of the plot. It was all wrapped up in the last 20 minutes, and even then the movie felt cut short. If it was 45 minutes longer, it would get a 5 star rating.»

«The plot was alright, I didn’t mind it, hell I enjoyed it. But my problem was this being marked as a horror film. This wasn’t scary in the slightest. I’m not asking for a jumpscare fest, but this isn’t scary at all. If you’re a Backrooms fan you will love this. If you are a horror fan, you will probably not like as much. If you are both, you would probably give it the same score I did.«

«This being Kane Parsons’ directorial debut at just 20 years old is impressive in itself and should definitely be celebrated. The movie took me by surprise because while I had constantly heard about it, I wasn’t really sure what it was about. I’m familiar with the concept of ‘backrooms’ but wasn’t sure how it would translate to a movie. I was pleasantly surprised at Kane’s vision for this movie. The story was interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. The tone felt eerie and mysterious, and the ’90s aesthetic was done very well. The cast, led by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, did a great job with this concept. During the third act, I do feel like things fell off a bit. The movie felt entirely too long, and the conclusion felt ambitious and confusing.I assume this was probably done on purpose, but it left me with more questions than answers. That being said, I still think this is a movie worth watching.»

«The ‘worlds within worlds’ is hardly a novel trope in fiction; Nabokov’s excellent short story ‘The Visit to the Museum’ (where the narrator discovers a vast museum that never ends) is an example. Kane Parsons’ film is another reworking of the theme; the film is a basically a nightmare, with occasional spells of wakefulness, that unfolds over nearly two hours. There are nods to other directorial styles (there are shades of Ari Aster, and Lynch would have LOVED it) but its originality shines out. Don’t wait for a streamer to pick this up, treat yourself a cinema visit — it’s worth it!»

«You’ve taken me to a 5 star restaurant you’ve been telling me about for months, given me the greatest appetizer I’ve ever tasted, then followed it up with a well done steak and a black coffee. Sure it’s a steak with a drink but it’s got no taste, and if you cooked and seasoned it right it could’ve been a medium rare delight with a wonderful sweet drink that leaves me pepped to come back on another special occasion. You set up so many unique circumstances and finished it with some silly, quiet, lonely ending, not to the desired effect. … I applaud Kane Parsons’ work as such a young talent, but being younger than him, if I were handed this ending, I’d feel cheated out of my own work.»
