If you like disturbing
horror
movies, then you probably have a list of your favorites, but you’re also probably always in search of new films to add to the list. One of
‘s
latest additions could
and should
make the cut.
The Coffee Table
is its title, and it’s one of the most disturbing horror movies ever made.
Currently sitting at 88% on
Rotten Tomatoes
, the Spanish feature from 2023 is now streaming on the horror-exclusive service Shudder. The film was only released on the festival circuit and played in only a handful of theaters in Spain. However, it rose to prominence when the master of horror, Stephen King,
posted the following on X/Twitter
: «There’s a Spanish movie called
THE COFFEE TABLE
on Amazon Prime and Apple+. My guess is you have never, not once in your whole life, seen a movie as black as this one. It’s horrible and also horribly funny. Think the Coen Brothers’ darkest dream.»

If Stephen King says it’s good, then it must be. These are the recent horror movies that the king of horror books has praised.
Horror specialist Mick Garris said, «You should NOT know anything about it before you see it,» when he referred to the movie — and it definitely lands better when you blindly go into it, but we will share a few details.
The Coffee Table
follows Jesús and María, as they have just become parents but are still struggling as a couple. María isn’t very happy and complains all day, while Jesús looks pretty tired and clearly unhappy as well. When the duo go out to buy a new coffee table, Jesús is convinced he has found the right one, but María doesn’t like the model. Still, she lets him buy it.
When Jesús is trying to put the table together in the living room and María decides to get groceries for the dinner party they’ll be hosting later that night, tragedy strikes. It’s something unimaginable and extremely gory that precedes a cinematic exercise in absolute dread.
There are plenty of streaming platforms out there, and you’re probably subscribed to most of them. However, when it comes to niche-based services, there’s few streamers better than Shudder when it comes to horror fans. Since its inception, the curators in charge of the library have done their best to collect the best of the best in the oft-gory genre. Regardless of what kind of horror you like — be it the beautiful, the ugly, or the weird — chances are Shudder will always have something up your alley.
In terms of disturbing movies, Shudder has plenty
.
The Coffee Table
is an excellent example of the kind of movies you’ll find on the streamer. It also has other modern shockers, like
In a Violent Nature,
and imports like the Argentinean films
When Evil Lurks
and
Terrified
, as well as the nihilistic
Speak No Evil,
and a Spanish horror thriller that’ll give you nightmares called
Kidnapped
.
Shudder also carries classics of the genre that still have the power to make you tremble decades later. The British nuclear panic features
Threads
(the one closest to a snuff film),
Faces of Death
, and two versions of the unforgettable French film
Irréversible
are also available on the streamer. It’s enough to put together a marathon of wicked movies, that should include
The Coffee Table,
