Jesse Eisenberg’s SNL Hosting Regrets and Career Woes

As the 50th anniversary of «Saturday Night Live» approaches, a number of its past stars and guest hosts have shared stories from their time with the show. While much attention has been given to instances where controversial figures like Donald Trump were allowed to host, a fresh story has surfaced from a host who appeared in 2013. Jesse Eisenberg, famous for his roles as Lex Luthor and Mark Zuckerberg, has spoken candidly about his time hosting the long-running comedy series, and it seems he doesn’t hold the experience in high regard.

In a recent interview on the refreshed fourth hour of «Today,» as reported by Variety, he voiced remorse that his long-cherished aspiration turned out to be much more bitter than sweet.

I’ve only got unpleasant recollections from that incident since I acted so foolishly. Back when I was 17, my ambition was to contribute to ‘SNL.’ I even prepared a portfolio and managed to secure an agent. However, when the opportunity to host came along, which was a decade later, I thought I could write all the sketches myself. I didn’t realize the process — it turns out they have their own writing team.

The actor acknowledged his past actions, which he now understands were out of line, stating, «I was clueless, and I guess I just wanted to write.» As it turns out, Eisenberg has always desired to write, so during that week, he surreptitiously passed scripts to various actors. He admitted that he wasn’t aware that wasn’t the proper way to do things. The actor further explained that he was misguided by someone who led him to believe that hosts could pen sketches for SNL. When asked if any of his written sketches actually made it onto the show, Eisenberg said, «Given how inappropriate and offensive my actions were, I’m sorry to say no.

I can’t help but marvel at the shining light Eisenberg has been under lately, with much of it owing to the critical triumph of «The Social Network,» which landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Yet, it wasn’t until his latest venture, «A Real Pain,» that his work garnered similar acclaim once more. This year, we eagerly await the possibility of another accolade for him at the Academy Awards.

Jesse Eisenberg Has Some Regrets Beyond ‘SNL’

Besides regretting the bombing incident during his SNL episode, Eisenberg also expressed discomfort over being linked to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg following his portrayal of Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Since the movie’s release, Zuckerberg’s empire has grown significantly, and his presence at Donald Trump’s inauguration further fueled speculation. You can read Eisenberg’s thoughts on their ongoing connection below:

I haven’t kept track of his journey through life, largely due to my preference to maintain a sense of distance from someone similar to him.

Eisenberg’s thoughts about his collaboration with Zuckerberg were recently expressed, following comments he made a few months back, where he suggested that portraying Lex Luthor had a detrimental effect on his career. This role as Superman’s arch-nemesis was in the controversial «Batman vs Superman» movie, which received widespread criticism from both critics and viewers. In an interview with Dax Shepherd on «Armchair Expert», Eisenberg shared his memories of that experience.

In a Batman film, I made an appearance. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t fare well with audiences, and neither did my performance. To be frank, this is something I haven’t shared before, but it feels somewhat awkward to admit it now. However, I truly believe that my poor reception in such a public platform may have had a significant impact on my career, as it left a lasting impression on viewers.
